Theodore William Hoyt, 95, a resident of East Road in Bennington, passed away July 2, 2025 at his home. Ted was born in Arlington, VT on August 5, 1929 the son of the late Cyril Clark Hoyt, Sr. and Rose Ellen Willis. He received his education in Arlington schools where he was a basketball player and a member of the 1947 team that went to the State semi finals. He received his Bachelor Degree from Northeastern University. Ted worked as a civil engineer and owned and operated Ted Hoyt Construction from the mid 1960's until 1995 when he retired. Ted served his country as a member of the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict where he was also a member of the European Theater Operations W.A.B. Squad Basketball champions in 1950-51. He was an active member of the Arlington Lions Club where he served as secretary, King Lion and District Governor, as well as a member of American Legion Post 69 in Arlington and the Harned-Fowler VFW in Manchester. In his earlier years Ted enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was an avid bowler and enjoyed playing golf. He enjoyed listening to blue grass music and cherished times spent with his family especially his grandchildren. Ted is survived by his children Stephen Hoyt of Bennington, Kevin Hoyt of Essex, VT and Ellen Vaine (Howard) of Shaftsbury, brothers Dwayne, Gene, James and Ralph Hoyt, sisters Anne Benini and Irene Burke, grandchildren Brian Vaine, Dylan Hoyt, Jayde Gooding, Payton Hoyt, Skyler Hoyt, Kolby Hoyt, and Jamie Brandi as well as many grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Margaret Pilling Hoyt who passed away February 2017, daughter Deborah Oakes Ernst who passed away December 2023, brothers Cyril Hoyt, Jr, Thomas and Frederick Hoyt and grandchildren Jason Vaine, Eric Oakes and Ronald Oakes, Jr. A celebration of life for Ted will be held Saturday July 19, 2025 from 2-4pm at Hanson-Walbridge & Shea Funeral Home 213 West Main Street Bennington, VT. Interment will be private. If friends desire, memorial gifts in Ted's memory may be made to VNA and Hospice of Southern Vermont, c/o Hanson-Walbridge & Shea Funeral Home P/O Box 957 Bennington, VT 05201.
