Reverend Richard McSherry, 71, passed away April 29, 2026 at Crescent Manor Care Center. A lifelong Bennington resident, Reverend McSherry was born in Bennington, VT at the Putnam Hospital on February 2, 1955, the son of the late Walter and Louise (Paddock) McSherry. Richard attended Bennington schools, graduating from MAUHS and Southern Vermont College. He later earned his Master’s Degree from the Northern Baptist Theological Seminary and went on to Pastor five churches for over thirty years. Music was a big part of his life singing in school and church choirs for many years. Richard travelled the country several times with the American Tapestry Chorus under the direction of Mr. Joe Martin. An avid world traveler, Richard was always enriched by the people and places he visited, and in turn enriched their lives also. For several years Richard taught English as a second language and American Cultural studies in Japan. In his many travels, he believed that our Green Mountains, and indeed all of New England, was one of the most beautiful places on earth. Richard is survived by his siblings James McSherry (Zarik), Grace Wilson (Robert) and Jean Shortt (Duane), nieces and nephews Christopher McSherry, Jonathan McSherry, Tanya McSherry, Allison McSherry, Andrew McSherry, Tammy Becker, Shane Becker, Christie Whitman, Michelle Johnson and Trever Hoag and many great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by nephews Jad Hoag and Kerry Hoag. A celebration of life for Richard will be held Monday May 4, 2026 at 1pm at the First Batist Church in Bennington. Burial will follow in Bennington Centre Cemetery. Visiting hours at the church will be held from 11am-1pm 2 hours prior to the service.
