Michael “Mike” George Shea, 73, of Shelburne Falls, MA, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Monday, April 28, 2025 at Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield, MA. He was born in North Adams, MA on July 13, 1951, first child of George Edward Shea and Virginia Catherine (Heaslip) Shea of Bennington, Vermont.
Mike was deeply proud of his family, always sharing their accomplishments with others. He cherished being part of his small town community, where he knew everyone and was always willing to lend a helping hand. He served ten years as President of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Shelburne Falls and was a member of the Elks and Western Mass Rod and Gun Club.
A devoted Red Sox fan and avid card player, Mike was known for his sharp wit, gift for storytelling, and never being at a loss for a joke, even in his final days. He enjoyed projects in his garage, daily newspapers, fishing, boating, and motorcycles, as well as hunting and skiing in his younger years. His love of conversation and easy rapport with others made him a valued friend and neighbor.
Mike attended local schools in Bennington and later graduated high school from Cardinal Farley Military Academy. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Business Marketing from Siena College in 1973, and post-bachelor’s degree in Furniture Manufacturing from North Carolina State University in 1974. Always eager to expand his knowledge and skills, Mike pursued further education in electrical systems and earned multiple licenses, including in steam power and commercial driving (CDL).
Early on, Mike worked at his father’s furniture plant, Vermont Hardwoods in Readsboro. Much of his career was in utilities with New England Power Company as an electrician. Mike also worked as a steam plant operator with BBA Nonwovens, Mount Tom Coal Plant, and Bear Swamp. In retirement, he found great joy serving his community as a driver for the Senior Center in Shelburne Falls. Mike will be remembered for his humor, warmth, and deep connections he formed with all who knew him.
Mike is survived by his children: John Shea (partner Katrina Wilson), Kyle Shea (partner Ashley Brunner), and Andrea Shea (husband Michael Carroll); his beloved grandson, Ethan Carroll; and his former wife, Judith McWilliams. He is also survived by his siblings: Mary Shea Rosen, Aileen Shea Gebbie, Brian Shea, and Tom Shea; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Mike was predeceased by his brother, Patrick Shea; his parents George and Virginia; and his grandparents, Joseph and Lela (Waite) Shea, and Charles and Anna (Fitzgerald) Heaslip.
