Margot Hooker Lord of Landgrove, Vermont and Captiva Island, Florida, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and aunt passed away unexpectedly on October 17, 2026. Born on February 3, 1940, in Hartford, Connecticut, Margot was the daughter of the late Thomas Bedell Hooker and Eline Hadelen Nielsen. She graduated from Mary Burnham School, followed by the Katharine Gibbs School in Boston. Consistently organized and professional, her talents were invaluable within the Madison, Connecticut school system for many years.
Margot’s talents and interests were many. A prolific reader, needlepointer, quilter, and cook, she loved spending time perusing local craft shows with her sister, Nancy. Her passion for cooking, gardening, decorating, NASCAR, and shopping was legendary. She poured her heart into her home, creating a warm, welcoming place for family and friends to gather. Margot's friendly, outgoing, kind, and generous spirit was a joy to experience, and her penchant for good conversation and connecting with just about everyone she encountered left anyone feeling special and loved.
Family was at the heart of Margot's life. Whether gathering the troops for a horse-drawn sleigh ride at Christmas, picking blueberries, or relaxing at the beach, for Margot, it was all about enjoying and sharing boundless love with her family. And of course, the recent past included a very special furry family member, Margot's late and beloved Yorkie, Bella, who provided constant companionship and endless joy.
Having lived in Connecticut, Vermont, and Florida, Margot maintained a bounty of wonderful friendships up and down the East Coast. Her endearing thoughtfulness, understanding, and empathy, as well as an unparalleled gift for gab, will be sorely missed.
Margot was preceded in death by her husband, George R. Cummings III. She is survived by her sister, Nancy Lattimore (Gresh), and devoted children, George Cummings IV (Colleen), Thea Woytowitz, and Sarah Raihall (Jeff). Margot was the proud grandmother of eight grandchildren: Brittany Woytowitz (Richard), John Woytowitz III (Victoria), Sarah Adams (Dillon), Meghan Thacker (Steven), Grace Cummings, Margot Raihall, Taylor Raihall (Courtney), and Natalie Raihall, who brought her immense joy and pride. Her legacy continues through her six great-grandchildren (Cooper, Jensen, Scarlett, James, Charlotte, and Rosie).
As we remember Margot, we will forever treasure her love, compassion, generosity, and unwavering support, which continue to enrich the lives of her family, friends, and countless others. To that end, Margot's family and friends will gather to celebrate her life on November 7, 2026 at 11 am at the Landgrove Meeting House in Landgrove, VT. All who knew Margot are welcome to join in celebrating the beautiful life she led. In lieu of flowers, Margot's family kindly suggests that donations may be made in her memory to the Captiva Fire Department, whose brave members were instrumental in saving her home during Hurricane Milton (www.captivafire.com/donation), the Second Chance Animal Shelter in Arlington, Vermont (www.2ndchanceanimalcenter.org), or a charity of your choice.
