Stan Zecher Jr.

December 23, 1935 — December 31, 2025

Manchester

Ilsley Stanford Zecher Jr. (90), known to everyone as Stan, passed away peacefully at home with his family on December 31, 2025.

Stan and Janie shared 70 years of wonderful marriage. Together, they built a life rooted in love, hard work, and deep commitment to family and the land they cherished. They were true partners in every sense, working side by side through all seasons of life.

Stan attended Burr and Burton Seminary, graduating in 1954, and would later serve on the Burr and Burton Alumni Association Board. He went on to attend the University of Vermont, graduating in 1958 with a degree in agriculture and soil science. Following college, Stan spent two years living in Middlebury with his young family, where he worked for the Soil Conservation Service.

After those years in Middlebury, they returned to Manchester, the place they proudly called home. With Janie by his side, he helped build Overlook Farm, where early mornings, muddy boots, and busy days were part of daily life. Stan had a true farmer’s heart, and Janie was the heartbeat of the farm—welcoming visitors, supporting every season, and helping create a place that felt warm and genuine.

Many remember Stan milking cows, long days on his tractor, throwing bales of hay, and being up to his ears in sweet corn, harvesting by hand in the early morning dew, proud to offer fresh produce grown with care. Overlook Farm became a gathering place, where families returned year after year, children watched vegetables being picked, and neighbors felt at home. The farm reflected who Stan and Janie were—hardworking, generous, and deeply rooted in the land.

Alongside farming, Stan devoted decades of his life to public service. He served the Town of Manchester in many roles, including Selectman, Planning Board member, Zoning Board of Adjustment member, Justice of the Peace, County Director for the Vermont Association of Snowmobile Travelers (VAST), longtime member of the Tree Committee, and the Manchester Rod & Gun Club. In each role, he approached his work with humility and thoughtfulness, always focused on doing what was best for the town and community he loved.

One of Stan’s proudest contributions was helping to found the Manchester Rescue Squad. For twenty-five years, he answered calls day and night, offering calm, care, and compassion to neighbors during their most difficult moments. Janie stood beside him throughout those years, supporting his service and sharing in the sacrifices that came with it. Stan had a gentle presence and a kind heart. He had a way of making people feel comfortable, valued, and at ease—whether through a quiet conversation, a helping hand, or simply being there when it mattered most.

To our family, Dad was our steady presence and guiding example. He taught us the value of hard work, integrity, kindness, and service through the way he lived every day. His love was constant, his wisdom enduring, and his example one we will carry with us always.

Stan lived a life we are truly grateful for, and we were blessed to be a part of as a family. He is predeceased by his father, Dr. Ilsley Zecher, and his mother Lucy. Stan is survived by his devoted wife Janie, and his beloved sister Judith Colton (Roger, predeceased). He leaves behind his children; son Douglas Zecher (Melissa); daughters Wendy Irwin (Harry); Sandy Zecher Hayes (Jeff, predeceased); and Debbie Rutherford (Larry). He is also survived by his ten wonderful grandchildren.
