Helen Grace Howard Olney passed away peacefully on July 11, 2025. She was born November 12, 1947 in Bennington to Alice and Arthur Howard and grew up on the family dairy farm in Shaftsbury and resided in one the historical homes on the farm where she raised her children and lived out her life.
Helen graduated from North Bennington High School and Castleton State College with her Elementary Education licensure. Her post college education continued to include a Reading Specialist endorsement. Helen had a long and much loved career in elementary education in area schools.
Helen was active in her community including being her children’s 4—H leader for many years and had many youth under her guidance learn invaluable life lessons. History and reading were close to her heart and she volunteered with the local library and historical venues. Her passion was Howard Park and all that it brought to the community, she was a founding member of the Shaftsbury Recreation Committee.
She is survived by her son, Jared Clawson; daughter Cathleen Robideau; sister and brother in law Harriett and Oliver Durand; granddaughter Alicia Robideau; and several nieces and nephews.
Helen was predeceased by her parents Alice and Arthur Howard; a beloved cousin Franklin Howard; and her grandson Tyler Robideau.
Services will be held graveside at the Shaftsbury Village Cemetery on Friday, July 18, 2025 at 1:00 p.m.. There will be no calling hours or gathering after the service.
