George Edward Coffin, 83, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2026, surrounded by the family who loved him dearly.

George was born in Portland, Maine. He and three of his siblings were raised by their aunt, Charlotte Wise, who became the only mother he ever truly knew. Her love, guidance, and devotion helped shape the man he would become. After graduating from high school, Ed joined the Navy and married the love of his life, Virginia “Ginny” Coffin, on April 19, 1963. Together they began their life in Brockton, Massachusetts, where they welcomed four children before moving to Maine in pursuit of new opportunities. They raised their family in Calais, Maine, and upon retirement, Ed and Ginny made Bennington, Vermont, their final home.

Ed proudly served his country in the United States Navy and carried that sense of duty and commitment throughout his life. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend whose presence brought comfort, laughter, and strength to those around him.

No matter where he lived, Ed left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He never knew a stranger and made friends wherever he went. He was known for his quick wit, sense of humor, stubborn streak, and his willingness to say exactly what was on his mind. Whether he was teasing, telling a story, or sharing his opinion, Ed had a way of making people laugh and keeping life interesting. Beneath his spirited personality was a generous and compassionate man who would gladly give the shirt off his back to help someone in need. Ed deeply valued tradition and believed in celebrating life’s special moments. Birthdays and holidays were especially important to him, and he took great joy in bringing family together, creating lasting memories, and showing his love through time spent together, thoughtful gestures, and acts of kindness.

Above all else, Ed’s greatest gift was the love he gave to his family. His devotion, and unwavering support were felt deeply by those who loved him.

Before retirement, Ed was an avid hunter and fisherman who found joy in the outdoors. He loved nature, scenic drives through the mountains, and spending time with his wife and family admiring New England’s beautiful fall foliage. A true people person, Ed cherished gathering with friends for coffee and conversation.

Ed was also well known for his love of cooking. Family and friends looked forward to his famous spaghetti sauce and fondly remember his homemade doughnuts, quahog stuffing, fried dough, and Greek salads. He shared a special love of New England seafood with his family, especially lobster and clams.

One of Ed’s favorite labors of love was Christmas. He took great pride in decorating for the holidays and selling Christmas trees, helping bring joy and holiday spirit to countless families over the years.

Ed was predeceased by his beloved aunt and mother figure, Charlotte Wise; his sisters, Barbara Breslow and Sandra Botcher; his brother, William (Marilyn) Coffin; and his brother-in-law, Johnny Andrews.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Virginia “Ginny” Coffin; his children, Paula (Roy) Moore, William “Billy” (Colleen) Coffin, Shayne (Amie) Coffin, and Kathleen (Phil) Brochu; his brother-in-law, Wayne (Kay) Andrews; his nieces, Kelly Helene, Dawn Steffman, Stephanie Breslow, and Leslie Willman; his nephew, Harold Holmes; and many other relatives and friends whom he loved deeply.

Ed was a proud grandfather to Natasha, Ariel, and Michael Coffin; Tegan and Duncan Macluan; Evan Mullaney; Emma-Lee and Tyler Coffin; Ashleigh (Anya) Garcia-Comart; Isabella (Sawyer) Garcia; and Abagail (Harrison) Hodges. He was also blessed with great-grandchildren Delilah, Caleb, Kristopher, Jalen, and Kylar Macluan.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of the Vermont Veterans Home for the exceptional care, kindness, and compassion they provided during the last year and a half of Ed’s life. He truly felt at home there and loved being part of their community.
