Emily Grover of Shaftsbury, Vermont died peacefully at home on November 26th, 2025. Born on April 4th, 1948, as Emily Elizabeth Elwell, she was the fourth child of Trenor and Janet Elwell.
From the moment she could, Emily was taking care of others. Whether it be a warm meal, a caring hug, strong advice, or even a swift kick to the behind, she was generously available when needed.
Em spent most of her life in the restaurant business. Around the age of twelve, she began to work at her parents’ diner, and then in various restaurants around Bennington until she retired from the Sirloin Saloon at its closing. She fondly remembered her job at the Iron Kettle Restaurant, where her humor and quick wit were cherished by the Vermont State Troopers that she often served. One of Emily’s greatest accomplishments was her own restaurant, The Peddler’s Lunch Room, in Arlington, Vermont. She poured her heart into everything she made, from homemade soups and breads to signature dressings and mustard. Emily’s passion led her to provide meals at a community care home in Manchester. As was her nature, it wasn’t long before she became the administrator of the home. This work brought Emily a deep sense of purpose.
What mattered most to her was the life she made for herself. Emily married Bruce Grover in 1969, and together they had three daughters. Heidi Marie, Betsy Jean, and Aimee Teresa were Emily’s greatest loves. Through the years, many would come to love Em and her endless meals and humor. She had many cherished pets throughout her life, as her love for all expanded further than people. Emily always hoped to remain in the house that she worked so hard for and took great pride in, surrounded by the family she cherished, including her beloved animals.
Fulfilling this wish meant a great deal to her daughters–especially Betsy, who lived with and cared for her until her passing–returning some of the selflessness Emily had shown them throughout their lives.
Emily is survived by her three daughters, Heidi Young (Ed), Betsy Tolliver (John), and Aimee Gates (Randy), and her seven grandchildren, Michael Hamilton (Dana), Kyle Lane, Damon Young, Emily Gates, Lucy Gates, Lily Tolliver, and Vincent “Peanut” Tolliver, as well as five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Margaret Brundige, two brothers, Trenor Elwell and Gordon Elwell, and a special niece, Sarah Stratton, as well as a good friend, Jeremy Tolliver. She leaves behind her dearly adored cats, Louis and George, too.
At Emily’s request, there will be no funeral services. Should friends desire, in lieu of flowers donations can be made to Second Chance Animal Shelter or Saint Francis of Assisi Society for Animals.
