Manchester

Carolyn Martha (Chuchvara) Stewart, age 87, of Manchester Center, VT, passed away peacefully on August 27, 2026, surrounded by good friends. Carolyn was born in Punxsutawney, PA on May 21, 1939, the youngest of 7 children of the late Andrew and Helen (Lazorchak) Chuchvara. She graduated from St. John Vianney High School in Flint, Michigan in 1957 and attained a bachelor’s degree in English. Carolyn taught school for several years before marrying James Douglas “Doug” Stewart in 1972.
After moving to Manchester, VT, Carolyn and her husband hosted several foreign exchange students in their home over the years. They generously provided educational support to several Brazilian students pursuing their education at the Tutorial Center in Manchester, VT and The School for International Training in Brattleboro, VT. Mr. Doug and Mrs. Carol, as they were affectionately called, thought of these students as family.
Carolyn was a patron of the arts. She especially enjoyed going to NYC to attend the theater, the symphony, and fine art exhibits. Locally, she loved attending Taconic Music concerts. Carolyn was a voracious reader and loved playing cards. Her favorite card game was Kings in the Corner, and she was a formidable opponent.
Carolyn was predeceased by her husband, Doug, her parents, her brothers John Chuchvara and Andrew Chuchvara, and her sisters Helen Stewart, Mary Ann Cook, Sister Mary Ambrose-OSBM, and Sister M. Bonaventure. She is survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, dear friends and her chosen family, Joia Dacaret and her sons, Mateo and Lucas.
A memorial Mass will be held on Thursday, September 24, 2026, at 11am, at Christ Our Savior Roman Catholic Parish, 398 Bonnet Street, Manchester Center, VT. She will be interred beside her husband at Glenwood Cemetery in Flint, Michigan.
