    Gertrude E. Manahan

Gertrude E. Manahan, 89 of North Road in Manchester, VT, died March 9, 2010 at her home in Manchester. She was born in Morristown, NJ on November14, 1920, the daughter of Ernest L. and Harriet (Dennis) Earls. She lived in East Hanover, NJ during her youth and was a graduate of Madison High School. She attended Traphagen School of Fashion in New York and later, the American Institute of Banking.In 1971 she married J. Raymond Manahan, former five term mayor of the Town of Morristown, N.J. They lived in Mendham, N.J. before returning to Morristown in 1987. Their love of visiting Vermont induced them to move to Manchester Center in 2002. Raymond predeceased her on November 27, 2004.Mrs. Manahan joined the First National Bank of Whippany, N.J. in 1945, and became the first woman officer. She became Assistant Vice President with Heritage Bank and later, Vice President. Her banking career spanned 37 years until her retirement in 1982.She was Regent of the Parsippanong Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution for two terms and was State Chairman for the Jockey Hollow Day in Morristown for three years.Mrs. Manahan was in the American Cancer Society Crusade Chairman for two years in East Hanover, N.J. and Chairman in Mendham, N.J. for two years. She was also active in fund raising for the Morristown Democratic Party, and was on the Board of Directors of Challenge Unlimited, an organization dedicated to the needs of families in Morristown.Gertrude?s many interests were in classical music, art, sewing and photography. She was also fond of traveling and entertaining.Survivors include a nephew; David W. Earls and his wife Anne of Erie, PA., a grand niece; Emily Ghiorse and her husband, David of Boston, two nephews; John of Harrisburg, PA and Patrick of Erie, Pa., her brother-in-law; David V. Manahan and his wife Ilene, two stepsons; John Manahan and his wife Joan and Peter Manahan and his wife Barbara, four step-daughters; Jean Coyle, Eileen Modeski, Patricia Anderson and her husband Wayne, and Dorothy Morley, and numerous step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren all residing in New Jersey.A Mass of Christian Death and Burial will be offered on Friday March 12, 2010 at 10:00 AM at Christ Our Savior Parish/St. Paul?s Catholic Church in Manchester, VT. A prayer service will precede the Mass at 9:30 am at the Brewster Funeral Home 34 Park Place Manchester, VT. Burial will take place on Monday March 15, 2010 at 12:00 pm at Holy Rood Cemetery in Morristown, N.J. Friends may call at the Brewster Funeral Home on Thursday March 11, 2010 from 5-7 pm.
