    Junior Arnold Harwood

Junior Arnold Harwood, 86, a resident of Sycamore Lane in Shaftsbury, passed away peacefully Thursday, Feb. 25, 2010, at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington. Born in Shaftsbury, Vt., on July 3, 1923, son of Frank and Ellen Lane Harwood, he attended North Bennington schools and graduated from North Bennington High School in 1940. Junior worked at Eagle Square and then for the State of Vermont as District Forest Fire Supervisor for many years. Junior was a WWII veteran of the Army where he served in five major battles of the Pacific including Leyte, Luzon, Saipan, Tinian and Okinawa. He was a life member of Manchester, Vermont VFW, the Hale Mountain Rod and Gun Club and was also a member of the Shaftsbury Methodist Church and Tucker Lodge of the Free and Accepted Masons. Junior loved and lived to go hunting and fishing. He loved the outdoors and cherished times spent with his family. Junior leaves his wife, the former Glenda McMonigle, whom he married in Flagstaff, Ariz., on Aug. 23, 1972; his children, Wanda Courcelle and her husband, Larry, of Mendon, Vt., and Matthew Harwood and his wife, Jodi, of Shaftsbury; his brother, Ernest Harwood of Shaftsbury; four grandchildren, Jeremy and Russell Harwood, and Jeff Courcelle and Sarah Kitchen; two great-grandchildren, Nevaeh and Silias Harwood, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his son, Russell Harwood; his granddaughter, Nicole Harwood; and his siblings, Priscilla D'Alessandro, Silas Harwood and Alice Pratt. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Junior will be held Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010, at 2 p.m. at the Shaftsbury Methodist Church. Pastor Matthew Bowles and Vermont Veterans Home Chaplain Kenneth Coonradt will conduct the service. Interment will follow in the family lot in Shaftsbury Village Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held on Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010, at HANSON-WALBRIDGE FUNERAL HOME, 213 West Main Street, Bennington, VT, from 4-6 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. Members of the Tucker Lodge Free & Accepted Masons are asked to meet at Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, 213 West Main Street, Bennington at 4 p.m. to conduct services for Brother Junior.
