Robert Brewster began his career in funeral service following graduation from college in 1926 when he went to work for Mr. Bennett. The original funeral home was located in what was referred to as the “Opera Block” on Main Street in Manchester. The building, which is currently the home of the Berkshire Bank and the Harvest Grille, housed the Factory Point Bank, a shoe store, a clothing store and the funeral home. Mr. Brewster took over the business upon Mr. Bennett’s death in 1938.
In 1945, Robert Brewster moved the funeral home to its current location at 34 Park Place in Manchester. This building was built as a Methodist Church and was sold in 1940 where it then housed an art gallery and then was home to a music store and also where music lessons were given.
In 1970, Mr. Brewster sold the funeral home to Dean Hanson of Bennington and became a part of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Homes in Bennington and Arlington. Robert Brewster passed away in 1985. In 1984 Dean Hanson sold the business to Robert Covey of Wilmington who was the owner of Covey & Allen Funeral Home in Wilmington.
In December of 2003 the Covey’s sold the funeral homes and crematory to Mark and Lisa Shea. The funeral homes of
Hanson-Walbridge Bennington Chapel and Arlington Chapel, Brewster Funeral Service,
Covey and Allen Funeral Home and the
Vermont Cremation Service in Bennington now comprise the Shea Family Funeral Homes.
